Breast Cancer – Pink Pink And More Pink
The color of pink has come to be associated with breast cancer. It’s hoped that by choosing a color as such it can help to raise awareness for breast cancer.
According to VicNews.com every week 431 are diagnosed with breast cancer. It is estimated that in 2008 more than 5300 people will die from breast cancer. 1 in 9 women are expected to develop breast cancer, meaning this is a disease that affects many families, and it’s a disease that needs a cure, the sooner the better.
The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation’s CIBC Run for the Cure takes on a pink look with pink shirts, banners, balloons, and more. The run has been going on since 1992 and not only has it been raising money it’s been raising awareness. Even though the next run doesn’t happen until early October, preparations are underway and part of those preparations involve the color pink.
There has been some excellent marketing strategies for breast cancer including the think pink marketing. There are many profit and non profit companies that are selling merchandise in the breast cancer pink with all or portions of the proceeds going to the breast cancer foundation.
However before you hand over your hard earned dollars for a pink campaign there are some things you should know about the company promoting pink products and you should also make sure that they are not pinkwashers.
Pink who? Pinkwashers are companies that in one hand say they care about breast cancer and promote a pink ribbon campaign but in the other hand they contribute to the breast cancer epidemic. You also need to ask how much money from your purchase will got to breast cancer, what is the maximum amount the company will donate, how do they raise other funds to help with breast cancer research, and what type of programs do they support.
Pink campaigns have done a great job for public awareness related to breast cancer, however as mentioned there can be a downside where companies know a good thing when they see it and there participation may not be as straight forward as you think.
Go pink, go pinker, and stay pink – support breast cancer research but ask questions and know where your money is going.
