Vitamin D And Breast Cancer – What’s The Link
If you’ve been diagnosed with breast cancer or diagnosed at risk for breast cancer you should immediately be checked for a Vitamin D deficiency. I know what you’re thinking. What difference does that make?
Well according to Stop Aging Now a new study women that had low levels or a deficiency of Vitamin D were twice as likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer.
It went one step further – those that were diagnosed with breast cancer would see it spread twice as many times, and the are 73% more likely to die from their breast cancer within a 10 year period.
Why is Vitamin D so important? It seems that breast cancer cells have a Vitamin D receptor and when it is activated by Vitamin D it will trigger changes at the molecular level that slow down the growth patterns of the cell and eventually cause it to die. Thus the breast cancer isn’t as able to be aggressive.
Dr. Goodwin from the University of Toronto, says that obese women are more likely to have breast cancer because the fat traps the Vitamin D and the body isn’t able to use it a cellular level.
Now that said, don’t run out and start taking massive amounts of Vitamin D. According to Dr. Holick the optimum range of Vitamin D is around 30-60 ng/ml.
Experts are now saying that individuals should receive at least 10 minutes of sunshine everyday to get the necessary doses of Vitamin D. If you live in the northern hemisphere you’ll likely need to take a supplement. The experts say 1000 to 2000 IU of Vitamin D3 is what you need to take.
Taking a Vitamin D supplement has other benefits. It’s known to be an excellent anti aging Vitamin. It’s apparent there’s a lot of value to ensuring you have enough Vitamin D in your body. If you are deficient in the early stages you may need a larger supplement until your body’s levels return to normal.
