One In Eight Women Will Face Breast Cancer

These days breast cancer is getting a lot more attention, and rightly so since one in eight women will face breast cancer. In fact, it’s the second most common cancer women suffer from, with skin cancer being the only cancer women see more often. So what are the risk factors women face when it comes to breast cancer?

If you are female, you are aging (which all of us are), and you have relatives that are close to you (for example, mother, grandmother, aunt) that have had breast cancer, then you are at higher risk of developing breast cancer.

There is nothing you can do to guarantee you won’t get breast cancer. If there was, none of us would ever develop it. And there is no one cure for it either. There are different types of breast cancer and they are diagnosed at different stages so treatments vary accordingly.

However, you do increase your risk if you are overweight, and/or if you do not exercise. In fact, regular exercise has been known to reduce your risk of several cancers including breast cancer. Smoking will increase your risk of developing breast cancer, and not eating the recommended amount of fresh fruits and vegetables will also increase your risk.

There are several studies underway relating to soy products, phytochemicals and cruciferous found in fruits and vegetables, and lycopene in tomatoes. There is evidence that all of these can play an important role in reducing your risk of breast cancer.

According to Prat Tribune, Mammograms should be conducted yearly after the age of 40. It is by far the best way to diagnose breast cancer early. The 30% of women who do not have health insurance are most at risk of developing breast cancer. There are many free mammogram clinics ran throughout the year. If you don’t have insurance take advantage of these clinics.
