Cryoablation Research To Start
According to Market Watch The American College of Surgeons Oncology Group has initiated a funded clinical trial with the National Cancer Institute, “Exploring the Success of Cryoablation Therapy in the Treatment of Invasive Breast Carcinoma.”
This study is going to evaluate both Cryoablation and MRI to evaluate post cryoablation efficacy. Patients can enrol in this study by speaking with their oncologist. It’s anticipated that there will be 20 clinical sites.
For years Cryoablation has been used to treat benign breast tumours as well as other medical conditions. There have been some promising results on earlier pilot studies and that’s why further research is about to take place.
Because this is a non surgical procedure it’s minimally invasive. It uses extreme cold temperature to destroy tumours. The procedure is done in the doctor’s office and takes as little as 20 minutes.
This is yet another exciting step forward in the fight to find treatments that work for breast cancer. But it’s really just the beginning. It’s hoped with all the extra attention given to breast cancer, more funds will be generated, and further studies will be done on other treatments that to date seem promising but don’t have the research behind them to back it up.
The American College of Surgeons Oncology Group is just one of ten groups that the National Cancer Institute works with to develop clinical trials. Cryoablation technology has a lot of promise. Let’s hope that the research confirms it!
