According to a report in Natural News, researchers at the Lund University in Sweden have learned that if you intake of Omega 6 fatty acid is higher it can actually lead to an increased risk of breast cancer.
Now while we’ve been told that the Omega’s are important it seems we need to watch our intake on this one particular Omega. The connection seems to be with Omega 6 and a chemical called heterocyclic amines
Previous studies had made an association between heterocyclic amines as a carcinogen and a high risk of breast cancer in rats. This recent study took it out of the laboratory of rats into the human race and it found that women with high levels of heterocyclic amines were at a much greater risk of developing breast cancer in women over the age of 49.
While researchers have found this link, they are having difficulty explaining it and what it might mean to women’s diets in the future. It’s likely that there will be a need for many more studies before an answer we can live with is arrived at.
And there’s a good chance that there will be changes in their beliefs. Heck just look at women’s hormone replacement therapy. We’ve gone from good, to bad, to okay. In other words, their initial study is no longer considered valid.
So what should you do? Should you eliminate Omega 6’s from your diet? No, you should not. While you should monitor your intake at least some, you certainly don’t’ want to eliminate any Omegas. Besides there are many other foods that have been associated with an increased risk.
However, what you should do is regular self-examinations, and if you are over the age of 40, you should have a regular mammogram. This is a topic certainly worth discussing with your doctor.
