Bavituximab Breast Cancer Drug Currently Recruiting For Trial
Peregrine Pharmaceuticals experimental drug Bavituximab met its main trial goals. Of course the study isn’t over, but this is still good news since it’s on target to date for what expectations were.
There are several Bavituximab trials that are recruiting right now. Click the link to find out more.
Bavituximab actually has 2 different mid stage therapy trials on the go right now. One is for advanced breast cancer while the other is for small cell lung cancer.
These studies still have to evaluate the safety of this drug when it is combined with chemo drugs like paclitaxel or carboplatin.
In the most recent study just 6 out of 14 had partial tumor shrinkage and 1 had a complete shrinkage of the tumor?
For those of you not familiar with Baituximab it an anti-PS monoclonal antibody analog used to treat viral infections and now perhaps cancers. It is made by Peregrine Pharmaceuticals Inc that’s focus is developing innovative monoclonal antibodies for treatment of hepatitis C and cancer.
Full information is available at Peregrines site what’s key here is that it has shown to inhibit the growth and development of tumors. In healthy cells the phospholipids are hidden inside the cell so the Baituximab doesn’t bind to them.
These leave Baituximab to target malignant cells. Healthy cells are left along so side effects are minimized and the overall damage to the body is also minimized.

The study participants have received 2 treatments out of 6 and the results for this time frame are remarkable, including one who had complete remission. It is expected that the percentage will increase over the term of the study as in a Phase 2 trial of Bavituximab + Docetaxel in Georgia, where the partial response percentages increased from 45% at 8 weeks to 71% at 20-24 weeks.
