Menopause Drug Increases Breast Cancer Risk
Livial is a drug used for hormone replacement in menopausal women, but according to a report in Reuters women using this particular drug are at greater risk of developing breast cancer.
If you have already had breast cancer you are much more likely to have a reoccurance if you use this particular menopause drug. And while we don’t want to look like we are pointing fingers at any one HRT since they’ve all come under scrutiny, this one is showing higher results than usually.
In women who have had breast cancer prior and take Livial 40% have recurring breast cancer and of those 79% die from it.
Livial is more widely used in Europe. It’s generic name is tibolone. It relieves night sweats, bone loss from menopause, and hot flashes. In other countries it is directly used for osteoporosis.
The tibolone hormone mimics both estrogen and progestogen, so women have to only take one hormone, one of the reasons this drug has become so popular in recent years.
As we know with studies one study says this and another is likely to come along and say something else, but women need to be aware in general of the risks associated with HRT, specifically pertaining to breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and cervical cancer.
If you are educated then you can make the decision that feels right to you and your life. While Livial has been shown to have significant increased risks those using it aren’t about to give it up too quickly because it works well and it’s convenient.
