Locks of Love

mini-hairI know this post is supposed to be about women with breast cancer. But I’ve had friends cut their hair off to donate to Locks of Love, a nonprofit organization dedicated to easing the difficulties of kids with diseases that cause hair loss. People donate their hair and the organization fashions it into high-quality wigs given to children with these diseases.

So what does Locks of Love have to do with women and breast cancer. Well, women with breast cancer undergo chemotherapy that causes their hair to fall out. Some women choose to obtain a hair piece or wig to ease the pain of hair loss on their appearance. Children go through similar emotions when they lose their hair.

How does the process work for receiving a hair piece from Locks of Love? A child goes through the application process. The hair pieces provided would sell for around $3,000 to $6,000 each. People pay according to a sliding scale based entirely on financial ability to pay. Children under age 18 with long-term or lifelong hair loss are given hair prostheses made from real hair that are made to the highest quality. Those with short term hair loss caused by conditions such as chemotherapy would usually wear a synthetic, but still high quality wig.

Contact your hair stylist to learn more about how you can donate your hair or visit the Locks of Love website. You won’t be sorry you cut your hair for a good cause.
