How does this medication work? Breasts are sensitive to the female hormones. The breast tissue has receptors that estrogen binds to in the cells. These estrogen receptors help to keep the breast funcioning normal for long periods of time. But if they turn cancerous, the presence of estrogen makes the cancer cell grow. Tamoxifen works against cancer cells in the breast by not allowing the estrogen to effect the cells there. It also seems to inhibit the growth of cancer causing by inhibiting the growth of new blood vessels that supply blood to the cells.

The drug is used for the treatment and prevention of breast cancer. Women who are at high risk of getting the disease can take it to help prevent potential tumor growth. It is also an effective tratment agains cancer for another woman.
