Who Was Susan G. Komen?

mini-1121367_single_ribbon_pinkSusan Komen had it all–a loving family who loved her, beauty, and success in life. Like so many of us, she never thought much about cancer. Then one day she discovered a lump. She had surgery to remove the lump, trusting her doctor. Five months later, the cancer returned and so began her three year battle with breast cancer that she eventually lost.

While undergoing treatment herself, she always found a way to help others even though she suffered herself. Day after day her struggle continued with breast cancer. And day after day, she continued the struggle to help others even as she neared the end of her life.

Nancy G. Briner made a promise to her sister that she would help fight breast cancer and thus the foundation named after Susan was born. It was founded in 1982 and since that time has sponsored more than $1 billion in fundraising for cancer research. The foundation is the largest nonprofit organization dedicated to raising money for the breast cancer fight. Susan would be proud. Nancy has kept her promise to her beloved sister.

The stories of Susan and Nancy really reach to the heart of love and compassion for others that is second to none. Both women are worthy role models. For more information about the Komen Foundation, visit the site.
