New Treatment Option Shows Promise for Breast Cancer Patients
We live in an amazing time. Major advancements are being made in the fights against many different diseases as dedicated researchers struggle to find newer and better treatments. Another new treatment option has been announced in the fight against breast cancer.
Mayo Clinic is a name that most people in the United States recognize as a cutting edge treatment center helping patients beat the odds. On May 16th, researchers there announced new hope for breast cancer patients with a new chemotherapy treatment option. The pros there combined Herceptin with two other low toxicity chemo drugs and tried them out on 45 patients with spreading HER2+ cancer, a difficult cancer to treat. Over 67% of the patients had a reduction in tumor size by at least 30%. This is great news.
Another big plus for this treatment is that people won’t lose their hair due to the fact that the drugs used are lower in toxicity than other chemotherapy drugs commonly used. Current trials are in the second phase. A third phase has to be tried to comfirm the preliminary results, but at least doctors have some new options to use in their arsenal and these combinations will most certainly become useful in the U.S. soon. Doctors in Europe already use this powerful weapon.
