Heart drug Digoxin may increase risk of breast cancer

pillsAccording to a study that was published in Breast Cancer Research, postmenopausal women who take the heart drug known as Digoxin are at an increased risk of getting breast cancer. The study that was conducted found 5,565 postmenopausal women between 1991-2007 who were diagnosed with breast cancer and matched them with 55,565 healthy subjects.

Of those subjects, researchers found that 324 of those breast cancer patients and 2,446 of the healthy subjects had taken Digoxin for a period of at least on year. These numbers certainly don’t seem too large, but what it suggests is that those who take the heart drug have a 30 percent higher risk of getting breast cancer than those who do not.

This is actually a contradiction to past findings that suggested that drugs related to Digoxin help to prevent breast cancer. The current findings now show that Digoxin may in fact be harmful, not helpful when it comes to breast cancer.

The study is ongoing and ThinkPinker.com will continue to watch for updates to keep you as informed as possible. Knowledge is power and the more you know about breast cancer and ways to prevent it the better.

If you currently take Digoxin, don’t panic, just be aware. Remember if ever in doubt, consult your doctor. Keep learning and keep hoping….one day a breast cancer cure will come.
