New link between breast cancer and gene found

BRCA1

BRCA1

Today it was announced that a group of Australian scientists have discovered a breakthrough in the link between breast cancer and a certain type of gene mutation.

Woman who are known to have the gene BRCA1 are also known to have a 65 percent chance over their lifetimes to end up with a breast cancer diagnosis. Originally the scientists thought that the risk was associated with stem cells that were specificallyin the breast, but now they say that it is actually the second generation or daughter cells known as luminal progenitor cells that are causing the trouble.

The scientists hope that this new information, which was published in the international Journal of Nature and Medicine, will aid in the development of new breat cancer treatments custom tailored to fight this genetic disorder. The news also brings a ray of hope to women everywhere that have been tested and found to have the BRCA1 gene.
