New research shows salinomycin fights breast cancer the best
A group of scientists from the Broad Institute in Boston have recently announced their latest findings with the drug salinomycin and its effect on killing off cancer stem cells. The findings were published in Cell and according to the study, salinomycin has been successful in killing breast cancer stem cells in the cells of mice and cultures.
While there is a long way to go with the research, it does offer a new ray of hope to those who have a breast cancer diagnosis and those who are breast cancer survivors. If the findings keep panning out, what it will ultimately mean is an effective way to kill off the stem cells in the breast that drive breast cancer tumors.
In the study scientists exposed breast cancer stem cells to over 10,000 chemicals and found that salinomycin was the most effective in killing them off. The drug was even found to be 100 times more effective than Taxol, which is a standard chemotherapy agent.
These findings, while still inconclusive, offer a re-newed sence of being for all those effected with breast cancer. As the study develops and results are released, ThinkPinker.com will bring you the latest.
With all of the wonderful research going on these days it is simply a matter of time before we can say that a breast cancer cure exists. Keep on hoping and keep on believing.
