The next breast cancer fighting drug may already exsist
The next drug to effectively fight off breast cancer may already exist in the form of a diabetes drug called metformin. According to researchers at Harvard, the drug has the ability to kill breast cancer stem cells in mice that have been tested. It is these stem cells that are thought to be responsible for the spread of breast cancer and the recurrence of the disease.
This news should give great hope to all breast cancer patients as unlike many drugs, metformin can kill the breast cancer stem cells which seem to be unaffected by chemotherapy. While the researchers know there is much testing that needs to be done, this news is certainly exciting and encouraging.
Along with killing breast cancer stem cells, the data that has been collected so far also shows that women that have been taking metformin for their diabetes are at a lower risk of getting breast cancer…talk about a welcomed side effect. Of course ThinkPinker.com will stay on top of this story to bring you the latest in future findings.
The best part about this new drug is that it already exsists. If proven effective against breast cacncer, the drug will prove to be a true double whammy when it comes to fighting diseases.
