Komen founder Nancy Brinker not happy with new proposed guidlines
Susan G. Komen for the Cure founder and sister of Susan, Nancy Brinker came out today with what she thinks about the new proposed guidelines for mammograms; she doesn’t like them one bit. Brinker is not happy with the new recommendations and said in a press conference today that Susan G. Komen for the Cure would not be changing its recommendations at all.
This really should come as no surprise. After all, Nancy lost her sister Susan to breast cancer when Susan was only 36 and now the new proposed guidelines don’t even call for women to get screened until age 50.
The federal task force says that screenings are effective in catching breast cancer in the earliest stages but suggests that too many screenings too early are leading to a lot of false positives and a lot of anxiety. However, most women welcome that anxiety and the ones that actually do receive a breast cancer diagnosis as a result of mammogram findings are sure to be happy for the anxiety if the early findings means they become breast cancer survivors and not a statistics.
Brinkman also expressed concern about how some health insurance companies may view these new guidelines as an excuse to cut back on mammogram coverage and to that she had a message; “We will be watching very carefully.”
ThinkPinker.com, as promised, will bring you more on these important times in the world of breast cancer as new situations such as this unfold. Keep on fighting and keep on hoping!
