Students asked to spit for breast cancer

pinkLast Thursday a group of students was asked to spit in order to help breast cancer. When I first saw this I thought of a bunch of kindergartners spitting all over the place, but in fact the students being mentioned were college students over the age of 18.

The goal with all this spitting is to collect genetic information that will then be used to further breast cancer research. The study, which is being conducted by the University of Arkansas, has been dubbed ‘Spit for the Cure’ and has so far collected over 14,000 samples with the ultimate goal of 40,000 samples to be obtained.

Participating women will be asked to fill out a form and hand that in along with the sample of saliva and will also be asked various questions from time to time over many years to come in order to track progress. Only those who give permission will be contacted and the samples are collected on an anonymous basis.

Spit for the Cure has been active for two years now and they are continuing to seek samples. ThinkPinker.com urges all those who can qualify to take some time and spit the next time this initiative comes to your college or town. It doesn’t take much to make a difference and aid greatly in the ultimate goal of finding a breast cancer cure. Just think of it as spitting i the face of breast cancer.
