More states citing ‘budget cuts’ and less free screening

buckAccording to the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Action Network, more and more women all over the country are being turned away for free breast cancer screenings or at the very best being put on an unusually long waiting list. Why is this?

The different states are citing budget cuts as the reason, but as California has already done in some areas, many women are being turned away if their age is not 50 or older. This age is right in line with the recent announcement by a special task force recommending that women should now get checked for breast cancer via screenings at age 50 and not before.

Each state handles their free mammograms differently. Some get funding for their efforts by the state itself and others rely on good will entities such as Susan G. Komen for the Cure to get money. But the cold hard fact is that at least 14 states have already cut budget spending for these very important screenings.

ThinkPnker.com is aghast at the entire situation. How can these states turn their backs on what is so important? It seems that yet again these new recommendations on mammograms may be taking a negative toll on those who are already without.
