New drug combo approved by FDA for fighting HER2

pink-24

The FDA made a major announcement recently stating that GlaxoSmithKline’s breast cancer drug Tykerb along with Novartis’ breast cancer drug Femara can now be used as a combination to treat hormone positive and HER2 positive advanced breast cancer in post menopausal women. The announcement is welcomed news for breast cancer patients with these certain type of afflictions.

Tykerb is taken in pill form and has the ability to block the function of the HER2 protein as well as inhibiting the breast cancer tumors growth. Using this drug with Femara saw women in a study go for 35 weeks before their breast cancer showed any signs of progression as opposed to just 13 weeks for women who used Femara alone.

It was the findings of the study that the FDA based its approval on. ThinkPinker.com is elated to see such wonderful progressions in breast cancer treatments but reminds everyone that it is not enough.

Until the day that we live in a world with a breast cancer cure we must all continue to give and give and give. Only by working together and providing researchers with the needed funds to conduct various studies will we one day is able to proclaim that we beat breast cancer once and for all.
