Mary Herczog loses breast cancer battle but leaves message behind
Mary Herczog is a name that may be familiar to those who have been affected personally by breast cancer. The Los Angeles writer was first diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 33 years old. She chronicled her experiences until the disease went into remission for the second time in 2002.
Sadly at age 45 Herczog lost her personal battle with breast cancer and has passed on due to complications related to the disease. However, she has left behind a legacy and a strong reminder; do not put off mammograms.
Here is a quote from her story as provided by her sister.:
“Early last year, a mammogram and an ultrasound diagnosed some lumps in my breast as cysts. These were promptly drained with a needle in a procedure you need hear no more about. I saw the doctor, a radiologist, again this past July. He then diagnosed more cysts, which I opted to leave alone, because they were harmless and because my never-large bra size would diminish with the draining. (Hey, you take what you can get.)
Consequently, one month later, when I found another lump, I dismissed it as a cyst the doctor had certainly noticed. And continued to dismiss it for a few weeks until it grew to more than the size of a peach pit and turned very hard.”
ThinkPinker.com hopes that all women will take this lesson as a bit of breast cancer awareness and not delay a mammogram when there are abnormities of any kind that are found. Remember, early detection is the key to beating this terrible disease and ignoring a potential problem will not help you out in the least little bit.
Rest in peace Mary Herczog.
