Teen’s breast cancer tribute costs him spot on team

kickMississippi high school kicker Coy Sheppard has been kicked off his football team. His offense; wearing pink kicking boots in a game October 8th and then again to the next practice.

Sheppard was wearing the boots as a tribute to his grandmother, who gave him the boots, and his step-grandmother, both breast cancer survivors. The coach however felt that Sheppard was ignoring his orders and promptly cut him form the team.

As if the cut was not enough of a slap in the face, Sheppard may actually now be in jeopardy of not graduating. His high school requires sports to be played in order to earn credits for graduation. Now Sheppard and his family have taken to the courts in an effort to win back his spot on the team and save his graduation.

It truly is a sad day when a young teen is not allowed to give a tribute to those he loves and is instead punished for his good deeds. Many coaches around the country encouraged tributes for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but apparently not all of them. Rules may be rules, but this one is not one that makes much sense.

Amidst all the scuttle, the coach is refusing to let Sheppard back on the team leaving a nasty court battle to ensue. This just seems like a case where action may have needed to be taken, but perhaps not in the drastic way that it did.
